Somethin' Sweet: Vegan + GF Treats
As if we need an excuse to devour delicious donuts... today is National Donut Day! We knew we had to introduce you to a new local fave of ours: Somethin' Sweet - gluten free, vegan baked treats made locally + delivered fresh to the DMV area. If you're one of those non-allergic people reading this and having doubts... trust us. They're THAT good.
A long-time home baker + already vegan, Somethin' Sweet founder, Katie, received her Celiac diagnosis in early 2018. She immediately started playing with recipes to turn her favorite baked goods gluten-free. But when her birthday rolled around last year, she didn't want a cake. She REALLY wanted GF/vegan donuts, which even in NYC where she was visiting were almost impossible to find.
So, she did what any good entrepreneur does: she made a product to solve a problem. And Somethin' Sweet donuts were born! Soon after, she learned about @shrublifefest vegan festival and it inspired her to take a leap into baking as a business. She started posting pics on IG of her work, and submitted to join the festival just weeks after making her first donut.
Ever since, she's been growing her client base and perfecting her vegan + GF line of treats. Although Katie specializes in donuts, she also makes double chocolate brownies + "Bang Bang" brownies (PB, oatmeal, choc. chip). And, we love that her recipes are also oil-free and can also be made nut-free!
Katie loves seeing how excited people with allergies + diet preferences get when they realize they can eat her sweets. And she loves trying out new things for clients... like the unicorn donuts a friend requested for her daughter's birthday, or the mini-donuts she first made for a @cerawax event.
You can catch @somethinsweet703 in person by visiting the @crossfit_lorton SuperFit Competition in Lorton, VA on June 22, or the July 20 DC plant-based @shrublifefest. Or you know, place an order online and she'll bring them right to ya!
