Desert2District Design + Hedi Nielson
As her IG handle implies, Heidi Nielson's wide range of work brings the colors and energy of the desert to Washington, DC with @desert2district... but she does more than paint cacti like the ones pictured here from a recent commission. Her illustration and design business combines her uniquely diverse background as a full-time WOC DC lawyer with her artistic side. She says that being a lawyer who moonlights as an artist and designer is uniquely DC (we agree!) and sets her apart from others in the industry.
Heidi's lifelong love for creativity and the arts started as a hobby and grew in earnest after she started posting her work to Instagram as a way to manage anxiety and meet other creatives in DC. In fact, IG is where she met Femme Fatale, and this year is her first joining the creative community pop-up.
With her illustrations, Heidi celebrates strong, ambitious women with collections like her "Ladies of the Law" series, and a collaboration with Hermanas in the Law - a DC-based group for Latinx lawyers. She showcases her affinity for her adopted home city of DC with illustrations depicting businesses and neighborhoods she loves. But she's a desert girl at heart, having spent most of her life in Arizona. She draws from her passion for the desert with mural and design work, creating paintings for individual clients and businesses of plant-focused designs in colorful, desert-inspired palettes.
Be sure to check out Heidi's work through the end of May at @femmefataledc, and take home a little piece of desert spirit with you. Or, you know, live our dream and get her to come paint a desert mural in your space!
