natural world artist haley mckey
We can't believe it's our last official Femme Fatale member feature for this pop-up run. Thanks to all the women who shared their stories with us and all of you who have given them so much love! The shop is open through July, with workshops and events all summer. Be sure you visit them and support your local womxn makers + artists.
Today's featured artist, Haley McKey (@arsfauna) is a DC-area native + artist, inspired by the natural world around her. Her creativity draws on themes from our region's native wildlife and the female figure, with a measure of mythology and archetypal symbols.
When Haley moved back to DC after studying art in school, she had a period of about five years where she didn't make any art all. When she abruptly jumped back into it at the age of 26, she started painting and drawing and couldn't stop. " I built my reputation as an artist very, very slowly - it still feels weird to introduce myself that way out loud. Weird but good!" she shares.
At last year's Femme Fatale in Tenleytown, Haley joined the team to make murals and create magical spaces for the pop-up. In fact, the photo here is her amazing restroom wall - which we would totally put up in our house, greenery included.
Her fave part about what she does is the creative process - making the art itself. But a close second is the Femme Fatale community. It's given her the opportunity to grow as an artists + entrepreneur and make friends along the way. She also says she loves everything she's ever bought there.
ALSO: Take yourself over and treat yourself to some holiday weekend treats with the Femme Fatale Sunday Funday this weekend! Discounts, raffles, music, and the well-known FFDC vibe will all be there, along with the amazing lady makers and artists who help create this community. Visit @femmefataledc for more details.
