Female Power Project by Leda Black

Female Power Project by Leda Black

We can't think of a more fitting week to share a post about a badass woman artist whose work shares the power of women's stories. It's never been more important to draw on the work of the women who have come before us, and to be inspired by them as we fight for our rights. Of her work, Leda Black says, "It's my coping mechanism, frankly, my way of handling the social decay we are seeing with the collapse of late capitalism and the growing wave of authoritarianism. These are the stunted fruit of malignant patriarchy. Something tells me that female power could be our last best hope of saving our species and our habitable planet." @ledablackartist defines her mediums as digital art and distilled messages. She started the Female Power Project (FPP) in 2015 to share the stories of powerful women. From that seed, she's grown a multi-faceted collection including prints, ephemera, wearables, and mixed medium fine art. Through it, she's creating and delivering messages designed to expand + promote our understanding of the capabilities of women fighting for social justice.

Leda's mission aligns so well Femme Fatale, that it's been a natural match since joining the second the pop-up. She says FFDC gave her a way to connect to a very diverse and outrageously creative female-centric community. Also, she appreciates working in a group (not usually her thing) that doesn't get all "group think-y." She says, "We're like a multi-star solar system and we each have our own atmospheres, temperatures, and orbits. I don't know how else to describe it." We think that's a perfect analogy!

We also love Leda's honesty about the awkwardness that some artists feel when stepping from behind their work + selling directly to the public. "If you meet me I am this sort of awkward, Aspergers person (maybe that's just the way I see myself). But the messages in the work mediate the interaction for me and we just jump over all that fuzzy small talk into the good stuff." Come see her inspiring work in person at the @femmefataledc store - now open through July!
